Health & Life Skills

Living a healthy lifestyle is about making good choices—not just nutrition and fitness, but setting goals and priorities, and avoiding common pitfalls that derail young people on the road to a productive adulthood.

The SMART Moves (Skills Mastery and Resilience Training) prevention and education program addresses problems such as drug and alcohol use and premature sexual activity. Young people engage in discussion and role-playing, practice resilience and refusal skills, analyze peer and media influence and strengthen decision-making skills. The ultimate goal is to promote abstinence from substance abuse and adolescent sexual involvement through the practice of responsible behavior.

Designed to incorporate healthy living and active learning in every part of the Club Experience, Healthy Habits emphasizes good nutrition, regular physical activity and improving overall well-being.

Character & Leadership Development

At Boys & Girls Club of Story County, we believe in the model of the servant-leader. In our Clubs, children learn the joy that comes from helping their peers and in giving back to the community.

Youth of the Year is Boys & Girls Clubs’ premier recognition program, a signature effort to foster a new generation of leaders. Each Club nominates a high school member annually to compete to represent our organization as the Youth of the Year, and to compete at the State level and possibly beyond.

Torch Clubs are chartered leadership and service clubs for boys and girls ages 11 to 13. Torch Club members learn to elect officers and work together to carry out activities. They work in collaboration with Keystone Club.

Sports, Fitness & Recreation

We know that nationally, there is a strong correlation between poor health and poverty. At Boys & Girls Club of Story County, our Club members disconnect from their screens to experience the benefits of exercise, teamwork, and engagement with others.

Triple Play is a comprehensive health and wellness program and includes three components: Mind, Body and Soul. The Mind component encourages young people to eat smart through the Healthy Habits program, which covers the power of choice, calories, vitamins and minerals, the food pyramid, and appropriate portion size. The Body component boosts Clubs’ traditional physical activities to a higher level by providing sports and fitness activities for all youth. The Soul component helps build positive relationships and cooperation among young people.

ALL STARS engages Club members 6-18 yrs in high-quality organized flag football, basketball, and soccer programs. Primarily funded by Buffalo Wild Wings, the program aims to increase opportunities for physical activity, social interaction and recognition through high-quality structured sports programming.

The Gamesroom provides our members the opportunity to socialize with their peers while playing pool, bumper pool, ping pong, board games, foosball, shuffleboard, air hockey, and much more. Additionally, these interactions help improve motor skills, teach structure through rules and regulations as well as foster good sportsmanship and fair play.

Taekwondo

The Taekwondo program at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Story County is not just about martial arts; it’s about building a foundation for lifelong success and personal growth. The comprehensive approach ensures that Club youth are well-prepared to face life’s challenges with confidence and resilience well beyond the wall of the Club. Since February 2016, Pete and Kate, a dedicated husband-and-wife team and certified taekwondo instructors, have been giving back to the youth at Club through their passion for taekwondo. Their dedication ensures that our youth not only learn martial arts but gain discipline, confidence and response for themselves and others through key areas listed below:

  • Goal Setting and Achievement: Participants are encouraged to set personal and group goals, both short-term and long-term. This practice helps them develop strategic thinking, perseverance, and a sense of accomplishment as they work towards and achieve their objectives.
  • Training and Teaching: As participants advance through the ranks, they earn the opportunity to teach younger members after achieving their green belt. This significantly boosts their leadership skills and emotional awareness.
  • Body and Mind: The program emphasizes understanding their bodies, building physical strength, and developing mental toughness. These aspects are crucial for personal growth and resilience.
  • Core Values: Discipline, respect, and perseverance are integral parts of the training, helping shape well-rounded individuals prepared to face various life challenges.
  • Tournaments: Each year, youth 9 and above have the chance to compete in two annual tournaments held in Brookings, South Dakota. They can also participate in the Special Olympics tournament held in Marshalltown. These events provide exposure to a broader competitive environment, enhancing their confidence and sportsmanship.
  • Inclusivity: Participation in the Special Olympics is particularly impactful, teaching inclusivity and empathy as the youth engage with and support athletes with different abilities.
  • Sense of Belonging: The supportive community within the program fosters positive peer interactions and a sense of belonging. This environment encourages youth to thrive both in and out of the dojo.
  • Long-term Impact: Many former participants return to volunteer, motivated by the positive influence the program had on their lives. This cycle of giving back strengthens the community and ensures the program’s sustainability.

Education & Workforce Development

We know that the most important thing that children can do to prepare for the future is to stay in school and to do well in their studies. We offer a variety of programs that introduce them to the many career and educational opportunities and help them make plans for their future.

Every day after school, our Power Hour program provides a great opportunity for kids and teens to complete their homework in a quiet place with support from trained, caring staff.

Money Matters promotes financial responsibility and independence. Teens learn how to manage a checking account, create a budget, save and invest, start small businesses and pay for college.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Story County is committed to closing the opportunity gap in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) with innovative and creative programs, activity ideas and resources for Clubs and the youth they serve. After-school and summer learning environments provide unique opportunities to advance STEM knowledge and increase interest in STEM-related careers.

Workforce Development gives Club members the opportunity to explore different careers to see where their skills and passions are through VR technology.
